Job Description Summary

Systems engineering is a cross-functional engineering discipline centered on an approach, mindset, and process. All activities that consider both the business and the technical needs of the customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the users needs. The discipline that executes a robust process of design, creation, and optimization of systems, consisting of identification and quantification of system requirements, creation of alternate system design concepts, performance of design trade studies, selection and implementation of the best designs and verification that the design is properly integrated and executed. Process that proceeds from concept to production to operation.

Impacts quality of own work and the work of others on the team. Executes standard operational/technical tasks typically subject to instructions and work routines. There is latitude to rearrange the sequence to complete task/duties based on changing work situations.

Job Description

Role Summary/Purpose

  • Provide technical leadership of Power & Propulsion systems on allocated merchant projects such as LNGC, LNG FSRU or Shuttle Tanker, in support of the Business Segments working alongside the Business Segments’ project management teams

  • Ensure that all technical requirements on allocated merchant projects are met

  • Lead and coordinate design teams to meet project objectives (quality, cost, delivery)

  • Identify and propose improvements in processes, tools and system solutions, rolling out improvements when agreed with leadership team

  • Provide support to the sales and proposal teams working on new prospects.

  • Work with this team to transition successful proposals to the implementation/project stage.

  • Ensure that all customer, contract and regulatory technical requirements on allocated projects are met.

  • Be able to carry out detailed design, typically at the system level, for example writing project, equipment requirements, test and commissioning plans and defining interface points within system.

  • Understand and Complete basic power systems design studies, e.g. load flow, coordination, harmonic, short circuit etc.

  • Act as the key technical interface to the customer and within the GE organization.

  • Act as the key technical interface to the suppliers, including evaluation of the supplier’s solution, and testing, in terms of being able to meet the customer and regulatory requirements at the proposal and/or project stages.

  • Identify and manage technical risks on the projects and ensure mitigation plans are in place.

  • Identify and propose improvements in processes, tools and system solutions, rolling out improvements when agreed with the leadership team.

  • As leader of multi-disciplined project teams, deliver full systems (including power generation and distribution, protection, power conversion, motors and energy stores, control and automation, as is applicable).

  • Ensure the appropriate quality control measures are implemented on the project and by the engineering team.

  • Establish and manage contract design documentation. Also produce design documentation as necessary.

  • Provide internal reports to project manager and appropriate line managers.

Essential Responsibilities

  • As leader of multi-disciplined project teams, deliver full systems (including power generation and distribution, protection, power conversion, motors and energy stores, control and automation) ensuring the overall design meets customer, contract and regulatory requirements.

  • Plan and progress all design, test and commissioning activities for specific projects, inclusive of communication to team members.

  • Establish and maintain engineering quality control system for the project. (e.g. Manufacturing Quality and Factory acceptance project)

  • Establish and manage contract design documentation. Also produce design documentation as necessary.

  • Monitor, control and manage engineering budgets and change control system.

  • Liaise with Platform Engineering, Technology and Value Engineering, and Supply Chain as appropriate in order to support the project and the business.

  • Liaise with other GE businesses, sub-contractors and suppliers as appropriate in order to support the project and the business.

  • Provide technical advice and assistance to the overall project team as appropriate including Commissioning and Service.

  • Improve the efficiency of the engineering process, through development and use of standard engineering solutions for projects.

  • Comply with all company and customer health and safety regulations.

  • Collaborate across the function including, Sales and ComOps for sales support with providing technical assistance to tendering

Qualifications / Requirements

The successful person would:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college / university in Electrical Engineering or Electronic or Instrumentation Engineering.

  • Possess at least 7 to 10 years’ experience in a similar site-based role within power, utilities, offshore oil and gas and/or marine sectors (e.g. FSRU, LNG carrier and etc).

  • Draw on their excellent communication skills, to manage and influence internal and external stakeholders (e.g. GE, Yard, Shipowner and etc)

  • Technical knowledge on Industrial Power Conversion equipment like generators, switchboards, transformers, converters, Asynchronous motors, POD, Propulsion control, energy storage, cabling etc.

  • Knowledge of International Electrotechnical Commission and Marine class rule and regulation. (i.e. IEC, Kolas, RS, DNV-GL, BV and etc)

  • Experience in design engineering, field engineering, manufacturing, shop assembly or spares/ replacement parts involvement.

  • Experience in O&G or offshore or Marine or Metal industry or Renewables

  • Ability to read and write technical specifications.

  • Excellence in Customer (Yard, shipowner) Service

  • Commercia & Delivery l awareness.

  • Ability and willingness to travel as required.

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience

  • Electrical engineering in Marine /Offshore Oil & Gas / Naval / Defence industry.

  • Application experience for drives, including marine (Naval or Offshore), metal industries and mining applications.

  • Marine electrical power and propulsion systems. Experience of interpreting power system studies such as: LV & MV Protection & Co-ordination / Voltage drop / dip calculations / Load flow and fault studies / Transient system and scenario analysis / Harmonic (VTHD) calculations / MV & LV power system cabling (cable selection, rating etc.) / Quality of Power Supply / EMC
