General Electric Specialist Position in Material Characterization Lab in Bengaluru, India

Job Description Summary

Inspection and Microanalysis team in GRC India is seeking Specialist in Metallography and Light microscopy within Microanalysis team. Specialist will work with scientists to prepare metallographic samples, execute optical imaging, and image analysis routines, process data for reporting out the microstructure data supporting the development of materials and processes at GE. Specialist will also be responsible for metallography lab safe operation and equipment maintenance.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Prepare high quality metallographic mounts of various sizes, shapes and materials for imaging and image analysis.

  • Acquire images, and large mosaics using light microscope.

  • Apply chemical etchants to highlight certain features for evaluation.

  • Execute image analysis routines for quantification of microstructure features on a wide range of material systems

  • Maintain microscopes and image analysis equipment in the lab

  • Grow expertise in metallography, imaging, and image analysis processing.

  • Collaborate with the larger team of experts using other characterization techniques to provide solutions for GE businesses and customers

  • Work independently and as an integral part of the team.

  • Interact with customers to understand specific project needs and timelines.

  • Collaborate and effectively communicate with GE researchers and GE businesses

  • Multitask and reprioritize in a high-demand environment.

  • Deliver high quality analytical results with outstanding attention to detail.

  • Collaborate and effectively communicate with GE researchers and GE businesses to provide written reports and verbal presentations describing methods, analytical data, and observations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Material Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with some research experience OR Diploma in Metallurgy or Mechanical engineering or a related field with experience in some research lab.

  • Experience with setting up and using material characterization tools and equipment’s such as Metallography equipment’s, optical microscope, digital microscope, Scanning Electron Microscope

  • Experience in sample preparation for material analysis such as cutting, mounting, polishing

  • Experience in developing etchants based on type of material and microstructure to be studied

  • Experience with handling light microscopes, Image analysis and further data processing software

  • Experience in using hardness and micro-hardness testers

  • Should be familiar with the relevant ASTM and ISO standard related to Metallography and optical imaging and image analysis

  • Proficiency or willingness to learn and develop specialty metallography preparation methods.

  • Ability to multi-task, reprioritize, and deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Strong analytical, experimental, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work in an environment where tasks are repetitive

Desired Characteristics

  • Expertise in set up and maintenance of metallography and light microscopy equipment’s

  • Experience in Scanning Electron Microscope imaging technique

  • Familiarity/expertise in scanning electron microscopy

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Willing to take direction and learn metallography, light microscopy, SEM, image analysis, etc.

  • Expertise in the operation, calibration of imaging equipment.

  • Knowledge of instrumentation and computer interfacing to analytical equipment.

  • Strong technical aptitude and an analytic approach to problem solving.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Flexible, able to work with experts in diverse fields.

  • Able to quickly learn new technologies and skills and thrive in an applied research environment.

  • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently carry out image analysis methods on a wide variety of material systems.
