General Electric Director – Software Engineering in Bengaluru, India

Job Description Summary

As a Director of software engineering, this position will apply your knowledge of management, software development methodologies, best practices, and proven processes to deliver quality software products on budget, within planned schedule with superb quality. You will initially be responsible for a direct employee team of 5 or more software engineers and will partner closely with other software teams delivering for the Gas Power Contractual Services business line.

You will lead the Redwood Simulation Engine software team. In addition, you will lead the technical strategy of all of the CS enterprise software solutions (7+) to achieve a microservices architecture leveraging fully the Advanced Modeling Platform delivering an integrated, persona-based enterprise system.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

In this role, you will:

  • Demonstrate very strong technical leadership and people management skills including solid communication and analytical skills with thorough understanding of product development and successful problem definition, decomposition, estimation and resolution

  • Lead and coordinate the technical discussions relative to future software architectural direction across multiple teams, driving the micro services strategy across the enterprise

  • Influences EB(s) internally or externally to DT

  • Design and execute on a well thought out strategy for SDLC across the software product solutions for the Contractual Services business, partnering with product management on the Scaled Agile Framework transformation

  • Analyze, designs and develops a roadmap, in conjunction with GP DT architects, and implementation plans based upon a current vs. future state in a cohesive architecture viewpoint

  • Lead the research and evaluation of emerging technology, industry and market trends to assist in project development and/or operational support activities for multiple teams

  • Deliver application and services to validate and ensure the overall Advanced Modeling Platform as well as the Redwood Simulation Engine meets all operational standards

  • Provides leadership, technology guidance and mentors others throughout the domain

  • Manage strategic business partnerships and relationships through Technical, Financial, Contractual and Relationship Management

  • Coach, mentor and lead a diverse group of lean/ agile software and user experience engineers, initially with 5 direct employees and partnering with other software teams

  • Work with product owners across the businesses to understand market needs & vision; quickly translate that vision into demonstrable software

  • Develop peer, cross-functional and cross-business relationships to maximize best practice sharing and team effectiveness

  • Work with product owners and architects to develop multi-generation software technology plans for the Contractual Services business, driving the technical microservices and cloud strategy encompassing all the software solutions for the business

  • You will need to work/leverage Enterprise Architect, Data architect from SWE teams, Solution architect from CTO teams.

  • You will also align the architecture strategy with RTE and Epic leader’s plans.

  • Drive increased efficiency across the teams, eliminating duplication, leveraging product and technology reuse

  • Support process improvements which guide the development, sustaining & support activities

  • Drive world-class quality in the development and support of products

  • Keep project data relating to tracking and financials current

  • Deliver resource strategy and plans, including use of 3rd parties/partners, etc., in support of development and support activities, partnering across GP DT and effectively utilizing the services of the GP DT software engineering organization

  • Plan and manage budgets related to scope of team

  • Communicate effectively both within immediate team and GE leadership. Ensure team receives consistent messages and has clear understanding of business direction, strategy and results

  • Build a world class software development team to consistently deliver complex software platforms and research projects of varying size and duration.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)

  • A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in software engineering OR Master’s degree with 8 years of experience in software engineering OR PhD with 5 years of experience in software engineering.

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in an engineering leadership / management role

  • GE Leadership Program Graduates will get credit towards relevant work experience, commensurate to the program they have completed

Desired Characteristics:

Technical Expertise:

  • Strong working knowledge in Cloud based platforms – AWS, Azure.

  • Strong Business Analysis skills and ability to translate requirements to enterprise software features

  • Familiarity with waterfall and iterative software implementation approaches (Agile, XP, DSDM, Lean and FDD)

  • Expert proficiency in tools supporting SDLC such as Jira, Rally, Aris, MS Project, SmartSheet, LoadRunner, etc.

  • Minimum of 4 years’ direct experience working with cloud production environments

  • Experience building systems based on cloud technology and scalable Web applications

  • Strong, Hands-on, and applied knowledge of Object-Oriented Analysis and Design, Software Design Patterns and Java coding principles, and Spring Framework (Core, MVC, Integration and Data)

  • GE Gas Turbine domain and understanding and Gas Power services business understanding is a plus

  • Experience with container technologies

  • Demonstrated coding skills, preferably in Java

  • Demonstrable knowledge of TCP/IP and HTTP protocols

  • Experience working with High Availability, Fault Tolerant architectures and High Performance Computing

  • Familiarity with Relational and NoSQL databases

  • Experience working with Monitoring tools like Nagios, Graphite, New Relic

  • Experience working in Unix/Linux operating systems and shell scripting

  • Well-developed analytical skills

  • A strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Familiar with Agile methodologies – SAFe

  • Experience working with AWS DevOps Automation and Programming Tools
