General Electric Lead Wind Turbine Controls Engineer in Barcelona, Spain

Job Description Summary

The Lead Controls Engineer is part of the Renewables Controls Platform team, which owns the wind turbine control system definition, component design, and validation. In this role you will develop controls software that interfaces sensors and auxiliary systems to the rest of the control system. Additionally, you will be responsible for the development, improvement, and quality assurance of wind turbine control systems. This role provides first-hand knowledge of wind turbines & wind turbine controls system design.

Job Description

Essential responsibilities:

  • Lead critical phases of wind turbine controls system and software development

  • Perform Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and develop comprehensive requirements for wind turbine features and components

  • Develop test cases for new or existing wind turbine control features

  • Develop controls strategy for optimal operability, reliability, availability, and safety

  • Perform controls software validation

  • Contribute to product configuration management, product sustaining, and customer support

  • Maintain control of safety, human factors and serviceability aspects as controls and turbine designs change

  • Contribute to Controls Design Practices to implement failure prevention

  • Support product development programs design review discussions and present relevant design details to chief engineers for evaluation and approval

  • Occasionally travel to site to support product testing and/or customer issues

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar field with Renewable Energy emphasis preferred

  • 5 years of experience relevant to wind turbine control system design

  • Proficient in Matlab Simulink

  • Knowledge of wind turbine generator physical principles

  • Ability to succeed in a global team environment

  • Self-starter, who delivers results with minimal supervision

  • Willingness to travel approximately 10% of the time


  • Master of Science Degree in Controls Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline

  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects in a global, matrix organization

  • Experience with industrial communication protocols such as PROFINET, MODBUS, OPC-UA, and IEC-61850

  • Understanding of data acquisition systems, remote monitoring, and SCADA

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
