General Electric Lead Engineer Product Safety in Barcelona, Spain

Job Description Summary

The role of Lead Engineer - Product Safety (in short: Product Safety Engineer) is part of the Regulatory Compliance and Engineering Program Management team (RC & EPM team) within the Offshore Wind Engineering organization. The Product Safety Engineer ensures that all assigned Product Safety activities within Offshore Wind Engineering are performed on-time and within required quality. The product Safety Engineer owns and contributes to the Product Safety metrics.

The Product Safety Engineer is also responsible for continuous improvement of internal processes related to product Safety and may make contributions to development of (international) EHS / Safety standards for Offshore Wind Turbines.

The Product Safety Engineer will be partnering with Sourcing, Manufacturing, Services and EHS teams within Offshore Wind in conjunction with other members of the Product Safety Engineering team. The role is initially focused on driving field issue resolution but will evolve with the growth of the organization in the coming time.

Roles and Responsibilities

In the role of Product Safety Engineer, you will:

  • Drive resolution of field issues: Lead investigation of field safety incidents; assist root cause analysis by working with cross-functional teams representing Product Service, Design Engineering, EHS, Legal, and the Chief Engineer’s Office.

  • Interface with other functions´ EHS leads in projects, services, supply chain to ensure all reactive design feedback feeds back into lessons learned for design integration.

  • Coordinate Design Risk Assessments of Offshore Products with the support of Engineering, for both new products and installed base in the field

  • Quantify risk: Perform quantitative risk modeling on complex systems to assess design safety risk. Lead the design team to identify and assess risk mitigation measures that assure a tolerable risk level is achieved.

  • Identify hazard mitigation of existing designs within the framework of field issue resolution: Perform risk assessments of safety critical systems and components. Ensure all aspects of product safety are addressed within the constraints of operational effectiveness, time and cost throughout the product life cycle.

  • Partner with other Offshore EHS functional leads in conjunction with other Product Safety Engineering team members and provide regular Product Safety / EHS design updates to management. Contribute to strategic improvements.

  • Develop EHS and Product Safety process training for the Engineering community and ensure regular training rhythm.

  • Assist in Interfacing with Sales Team to support Customer EHS / Design reviews.

  • Interface with international teams of engineers from all Wind departments across multiple disciplines

  • You may participate in international EHS Offshore Wind Industry working groups and represents GE´s position / direction in definition / revision of EHS standards, in case you bring this expertise. ​

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Safety, Environmental, or Industrial Engineering

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in EHS (performing engineering hazard / risk analysis, system design engineering, or operating and servicing power generation equipment).

  • Proven influencing skills

  • Knowledge of Design safety legislation and implementation

  • Advanced level of Technical-Business English, both verbally and in writing.

  • Good communication, interpersonal, leadership and presentation skills, including ability to work across cultural boundaries in a global team

  • Working knowledge of Wind Turbine Mechanical and Electrical Systems; experience in a similar role in the Wind Industry

  • Strong technical aptitude, including project management and applicable engineering tools and systems

  • Team player and ability to self-direct

  • Diligent record keeping, acute attention to detail

  • PC proficiency (Microsoft Office)

Desired Characteristics

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Safety, Environmental, or Industrial Engineering

  • Knowledge of GE Renewables organization and equipment designs

  • Experience with development and delivery of training material

  • Demonstrated design creativity and problem-solving capabilities

  • Comfortable working in a matrix structure having hierarchical & functional manager
