General Electric Staff UX Design Researcher in Atlanta, Georgia

Role Summary:

As a Staff UX Design Researcher, you will lead major product UX engagement, contributing to the understanding of our customers and the users of our products and help shape an industry. You will lead small to medium sized enterprise projects, partnered with an Interaction Designer, working as a team throughout the design and development lifecycle. As one of the first to join this new design team, you will have a big impact on design decisions, and work as a strategic partner with product teams

Essential Responsibilities:

  • You understand and champion the importance of research to the design process and act as an active member of the user experience team.

  • Propose design or product solutions based on research and synthesis outcomes.

  • Select and use appropriate design research methods to address design opportunities.

  • Plan and conduct interview sessions with users and stakeholders, including executives.

  • Builds consensus among individuals and groups.

  • Identify and summarize meaningful insights derived from design research

  • Lead multiple projects of various sizes in a cross-functional environment

  • Advocate for user research and help champion buy in from stakeholders and businesses

  • Produce and guide effective documentation of research and testing including notes, photos, video and resulting analysis

  • Document and communicate user findings through detailed personas, journey maps, and other story telling techniques.

  • Participate in and begin to influence the business-wide discussions relative to the future direction of user experience initiatives

  • Lead evaluation of current and emerging design, technology, industry, and market trends.

  • Demonstrate a mastery of Agile / Lean UX methodologies Qualifications/Requirements: Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Cognitive or Experimental Psychology, Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors; or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math); or equivalent experience

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in product or service design OR Master’s degree with 5 years of experience in product or service design. Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be willing to travel up to 20%

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Atlanta, Georgia Desired Characteristics: Technical Expertise:

  • Creates research protocols with guidance. Selects appropriate research methods to answer questions and develop holistic understanding of user and customer needs.

  • Facilitates group understanding of research data; leverages data to derive actionable insights.

  • Identifies appropriate synthesis techniques to meet the needs of specific business and design situations. Business Acumen:

  • Understands the competitive landscape, regulatory marketing, etc. Articulates clearly the main industry dynamics.

  • Understands key principles of design thinking, what it is and why it is important. Explores all ideas, regardless of their source.

  • Works to create an understanding of how individual people and things fit within larger structures (like systems or organizations), as well as the relationships between parts of a system and the overall system. Leadership:

  • Creates project plans for UX projects or the UX portion of a larger development project. Continuously measures deliverables of self and team against scheduled commitments. Effectively balances different, competing objectives.

  • Keeps participants focused on task and end process. Guides participation to include all present; solicits information about absent stakeholders.

  • Expresses UX and design concepts to collaborators on cross functional teams. Goes beyond merely presenting designs, explains the story of the rationale and benefit of design ideas.
