GE Energy Financial Services makes investments in energy-related businesses around the world. You will work with internal risk, compliance, portfolio, investment strategies, origination teams as well as manage outside legal and other consulting services in understanding how energy is procured, regulated and paid for across multiple US and international jurisdictions, assessing risk associated therewith and proactively advocating for policies which enable investment certainty and reduce risk.
Maintain broad knowledge of and monitor energy regulation and market structures both in the US and in selected international markets, including understanding of activities of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, state public utility commissions, markets operators, regulated utilities, NGO and other stakeholders.
Provide legal advice on applicability, scope and impact of energy laws and regulations, and deliver periodic updates on major regulatory developments.
Work as part of deal teams to identify regulatory risks in new investments and apply knowledge creatively to mitigate concerns. Attention to detailed market rules will be required.
Assist in protecting portfolio value through risk mitigation and advocacy at all governmental levels.
Work on strategic initiatives to assist in asset valuation and business development.
Work with EFS General Counsel, EFS commercial and functional leads, and GE Governmental Relations on EFS policy objectives, development and advocacy, and proactively present policy and other concerns at all regulatory levels.
Collaborate with EFS Regulatory Compliance function to ensure all energy regulatory requirements for EFS are fully addressed.
Work with GE litigation teams on contentious matters involving energy regulatory issues and disputes.
Graduate Degree in Law or Public Policy (or related field)
8+ years experience in national or international law firm, highly regulated industry, or governmental agency.
Energy industry experience
Excellent written and oral communications skills (writing sample may be requested)
Ability to work flexibly in non-traditional and cross-functional teams
Willingness to travel, as necessary (especially domestically)
Ability to be a creative problem-solver
Ability to manage outside counsel and advisors
Excellent legal research skills
