Role Summary/Purpose

Energy Consulting, a part of GE Energy Connections, has offices in 22 countries and offers our global clients (external & internal GE) a wide range of solutions across the entire spectrum of power generation, delivery and utilization. As a member of the Energy Consulting team, the successful candidate will be an active contributor to GE Energy business initiatives related to power systems equipment and services.

Essential Responsibilities

As a Principal Engineer, Transmission Planning CoE, you will:

  • Be an active contributor to GE Energy Connections business initiatives related to power systems equipment and services

  • Have strong technical and analytical skills, written and oral communications skills

  • Lead project teams consisting of multiple consultants by providing power system analysis including power system load flow, stability and transient studies

  • Proactively seek out new opportunities and study work by responding to Requests for Proposals from GE internal customers, grid operators, utilities, developers, and other industry organizations

  • Develop projects with customers; manage contracts to ensure technical, schedule and cost objectives are met; actively participate in identifying and cultivating new customers and business opportunities; lead preparation of proposals; and make customer presentations

  • Have experience with analysis, design, or operation of electric power systems

  • Compile results from technical analysis to produce detailed, concise, analytical reports

  • Contribute to multiple project teams to perform technical analysis of electric power system

  • Document and present project findings and deliverables

  • Have experience with power system dynamic model development

  • Contribute to GE Energy Connections systems engineering activities including studies, internal product and service support, sales and marketing functions

  • Actively participate in a working environment where teamwork, quality, customer service and innovation are prized

  • Provide product development and technical support to GE businesses as required


  • Master’s Degree in Electrical or Electric Power Engineering. (Bachelor’s Degree in physical sciences or applied mathematics acceptable when combined with a minimum of four years of electric power industry experience).

  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience in:

  • electrical power systems engineering, or

  • transmission planning, or

  • industry power plant engineering,

  • feasibility/integration analysis of renewable assets, or

  • rules and regulations for transmission system design and operation, e.g., FERC rules, IEC/IEEE Standards, and NERC guildlines, or other relevant disciplineEligibility Requirements:

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 30%

  • Ability and willingness to work out of location in Schenectady, NY

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Desired Characteristics

  • Ph.D. or other advanced degree with focus on electric power systems

  • Passion for working in an open, sharing, and supportive environment where colleagues welcome opportunities to assistant each other with solving challenging technical problems

  • Active participation within industry professional societies, such as IEEE, CIGRE, or other industry stature such as PE license

  • Experience with powerflow, stability and transient analysis

  • Understanding of power grid interactions with power plant equipment and controls

  • Support and mentor team

  • Proficiency with key analytical tools, e.g., PSLF, PSS/e, Matlab, PSCAD/ EMTDC, EMTP, Python, DigSILENT, ASPEN, ETAP, and MS Office

  • Ability to perform engineering analysis and design, and to develop engineering solutions in a team environment, and to provide technical consulting services to customers
