Role Summary/Purpose

The Lead Plant, Integration & Commissioning Engineer will work on substation related projects with designers, peer engineers & leaders. You will need to have great attention to detail with a can-do attitude & customer responsiveness. This role will be responsible for leading & coordinating all technical aspects of HV (High Voltage) / EHV (Extra High Voltage) substation projects working with local & remote designers & drafters.

Essential Responsibilities

As the Lead Plant, Integration & Commissioning Engineer, you will:

  • Be responsible for leading and coordinating all technical aspects of power equipment projects

  • Be responsible for the single line diagrams, plan and elevation drawings, relay protection and control requirements, and layouts for conduit and wiring, grounding, and control buildings which may be developed with other project team members

  • Write equipment specifications and issuance of material purchase request forms, and vendor quotation evaluation

  • Be a single point of contact for technical issues for the customer and project manager

  • Direct efforts of engineers designers and drafters, coordinate with sourcing and the project team on technical matters to meet project specifications, cost control and schedule objectives

  • Interface with internal and external team members

  • Need to support development of proposals including: writing and/or reviewing technical specifications, estimating design man-hours and materials, supporting sourcing for vendor quotations, directing design on drawing requirements, and the development of clarifications and exceptions as well as technical responses

  • Define processes, procedures, perform RCA’s (Root Cause Analysis), perform corrective actions, and validate process control

  • Support quality initiatives including aspects of ISO9002


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Minimum of five years of experience in industrial or utility power delivery engineeringELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time, including international travel and must comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies

  • Ability and willingness to work out of a GE office in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois

Desired Characteristics

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (power)

  • Working knowledge of applicable design calculations such as battery sizing & DC (Direct Current) system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection and derating, bus and insulator selection, ground grid design, lightning shielding, Lighting calculations, Fill ratio calculation, voltage drop & AC (Alternating Current) calculations

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Creative & able to lead a team

  • Accountable for team results in order to deliver a high quality product on time and under budget experience as Project Engineer in substation type applications, including substation automation, SCADA, control and relay protection

  • Knowledge of and experience using IEEE (Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers) & ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards and codes such as the NEC (National Electrical Code) and NESC (National Electrical Safety Code)

  • Ability to engineer design packages when no clear customer specification is provided

  • Field testing and commissioning experience

  • Demonstrated electrical and mechanical troubleshooting capability

  • Previous experience installing and operating power equipment

  • Ability to develop and implement standards and structured programs

  • Good presence in front of the customer with demonstrated commercial experience such as Project Management

  • Excellent personal computer skills, including software development, and familiarity with AutoCAD / Microstation

  • Professional Engineering registration (within the U.S.)

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in T&D (Transmission & Distribution) substation / power delivery systems engineering and projects
