Job Description Summary

The Product Safety Focal for Flight Safety, Commercial Engines will act as the primary contact between the Flight Safety Office and the commercial product lines. Product Safety Engineering is a cross-functional engineering discipline centered on the safe and continued operation of the GE Aerospace products. As part of the GE Aerospace Safety Management System (SMS), the Safety Focal is responsible for implementing and enhancement of safety policy and procedures, supporting Product line safety-related Certification efforts and assigned Safety Program Management Team (SPMT(s)) analyzing and mitigating overall product risk and promoting a safety culture. This position reports to the Commercial Product Flight Safety Subsection Manager.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the design, development and practical implementation of product safety engineering methodologies and techniques for GE Aerospace products. Execute a process to identify and mitigate safety risks to an acceptable level; conduct rigorous safety risk assessments when authorized, hazard evaluations, utilize human factors principles to drive design improvements to minimize human error in the operation and maintenance of the product in the field.

  • Serve as the flight safety point of contact for an assigned commercial product ensuring the safe operation of the fleet.

  • Promote Flight Safety & Reliability improvements for new aircraft engine product designs within technical and program requirements.

  • Act as voting member of the engine’s Safety Program Management Team (SPMT) to support safe operation of the fleet in development and in the field.

  • Represent the Flight Safety Office in appropriate program meetings to ensure compliance to the policies and procedures set in place. Promote a safety culture within the enterprise.

  • Manage the program worklist items to support timely disposition of SPMT Action Items by understanding status, actions, and proper documentation in the Safety System Database (XFRACAS).

  • Identify safety concerns at the program level and proactively communicate across programs and Design Boards, as appropriate, to ensure lessons learned are read across to other potentially affected products.

  • Lead the end-to-end process for Product Line Risk Assessments (RAs) including preparation, formal review, presentation, and documentation. Present RAs to the executive team, airframers and regulatory agencies. Provide Flight Safety Office safety guidance and recommendations.

  • Classify and document safety incidents/events using industry CAAM levels to identify potential trends or leading indicators.

  • Document best practices, procedures and lessons learned in Standard Work to ensure proper flowdown to other team members.

  • Capable of handling sensitive issues associated with active field investigations.

  • Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience. Explains information; developing skills to bring team members to consensus around topics within field. Conveys performance expectations and holds team accountable.

  • May lead functional teams or projects with minimal resource requirements, and/or complexity. Communicates difficult concepts and may influence others' options on topics.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or, Computer Science from an accredited college or university

  • At least 5 additional years of experience in a program or project leadership role within an engineering environment.

Desired Characteristics

  • Certification degree with experience (A&P mechanic or Pilot Certification) Effective project management ability. Capable of holding others accountable to the program deliverables.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, this role requires interfacing with senior management, airframer, engine partners and external regulators. Ability to represent GE Aviation at customer reviews and system safety groups to address propulsion system safety issues.

  • TOPS8D and/or Apollo Root Cause Analysis trained

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Knowledge of engine turbofan architecture, mechanical design and assembly procedures.

  • Knowledge of safety risk assessment generation, interpretation and presentation

  • Capable of analyzing and identifying trends in data. Makes data driven decisions.

  • Ability to travel globally.

  • Familiarity with GE’s product lines and their joint venture partners.

  • Experience with the Flight Safety & Reliability tasks for Commercial / Military programs through the product life cycle; including design, product risk assessments, hazard tracking, accident/incident record maintenance, and accident incident investigation.

  • Should be willing to become an accident investigator.
