Role Summary/Purpose

The Staff Network Operations Engineer will be responsible for driving network operations programs and support for the GE WAN environment. This will include interacting with strategic global vendors to maintain and support our infrastructure, making changes to critical infrastructure, resolving incidents, leading problem tickets, and driving programs to increase the performance and availability of our environment.

Essential Responsibilities

The Staff Network Operations Engineer is responsible for:

  • Day to day operational functions related to core routing/switching, WAAS, firewalls, IPS, remote site WAN connectivity and Cisco ISE.

  • Proactive health, capacity, failover planning and obsolescence management for remote WAN connectivity (spoke routers/circuits/WAE devices).

  • Member of teams focused on improving the performance and availability of our core network; including the WAAS & ISE environments.

  • Technical escalation for outages to the remote WAN connectivity and WAN backbone.

  • Leading the change planning / scripting / implementation of changes and peer reviewing scripts to help catch impactful errors and adherence to standards.

  • Leading the follow up and investigative actions for systemic problems in the environment.

  • Part of a team doing IOS upgrades on remote WAN gear.

  • Part of an on call rotation (24x7x365) for critical outages.

  • Part of the core team designing, configuring, deploying, and supporting the traffic segregation overlay of VRFs on circuits and network devices.

  • Support for ISE environment working with the remote support teams to diagnose and resolve ISE issues.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Management or other technical / IT field, OR in lieu of a degree: a HS diploma/GED and a minimum 5 years of IT experience or equivalent military experience / training

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in IT Infrastructure

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in telecommunications / systems infrastructure in a large-scale / global enterprise.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong working knowledge of BGP networking, MPLS, VRF, and networking technologies (routing/switching, firewall, WAAS, ISE, etc.)

  • Experience supporting Cisco ASA Firewalls.

  • Experience supporting WAAS / APPNAV.

  • Experience supporting ISE.

  • Experience supporting WAN connectivity to spoke sites and troubleshooting MPLS / ISP circuit issues.

  • Experience upgrading the IOS of Cisco routers/switches/WAAS devices.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and project management skills.

  • Strong team player: collaborates well with others to solve problems and actively incorporates input from various sources.

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex issues using packet capture tools like Wireshark, Iperf, etc.

  • Strong analytical skills: strong problem solving skills; communicates in a clear and succinct manner and effectively evaluates information / data to make decisions; anticipates obstacles and develops plans to resolve.

  • Change oriented: actively generates process improvements; supports and drives change, and confronts difficult circumstances in creative ways.

  • Balances multiple and competing priorities and executes accordingly.

  • CISSP, CISM, CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE certification
